Grimm TV Show - The Moment You Lost Me

Okay. Squeaky the Squirrel hasn't much to do with Grimm.  I needed a picture, though.  He fit the bill.

If I could recall an exact moment when the show lost me, it was when he didn't listen to his aunt and stayed with Juliet.

Oh, Grimm.  You started out so strong. Nick was great.  So was the Monroe, Sgt. Wu, Adalin Shade, the aunt, and the mom.

But you got too soft.  Everyone starting feeling bad for Nick. Everyone became his friend.  That made it boring and saccharine.

You know what you should have done? You should have had Nick break things off with Juliet.  You should have made him hate himself for that.  You should have him alienate himself from Hank. You should have kept Captain Renard as a baddie, too.

You know who would have been a perfect antagonist to Nick Burkhardt?  Nick Burkhardt.  Nick could have hated being a Grimm.  He could have lived in his teardrop trailer while he defeated the bad guys who crossed his path. Maybe he could have accidentally killed some good guys, too.  He could have drunk his sorrows away while become a kick @ss Grimm.

You lost me when everyone began to love Nick. You could have kept me if you'd given me a reason to pity him.

You know how you could have closed the show? With him quitting police work and Grimming altogether.  He could have found a new girl to marry (who didn't know about his past), had a kid and secretly taught him/her the ways of Grimming. Then, for the final episode, have some bad guy come and kill him off.  But you know what? That version of Nick would have been okay with that.  He had it coming, and it was a relief.

Ah well.  It was a pretty good first half season.  Thanks for the entertainment.

Inspiration...Other Writers!!!

I think that one of my favorite things about this weekend's conference (SDSU's Writer's Conference) was meeting other fellow writers.  I enjoyed hearing about every single story they wanted to share with me. Sure, who knows which of us will get published?  Still, every single story I heard was worth hearing and learning.  I honestly hope that I keep in touch (which I am working on already) with every single one of them. 

I also learned that I have to get business cards made for myself!!  That will be the next big project.

How to NOT Write a Sex Scene

Okay, so I'm a bit of a wuss.  I was too scared to title this post "How to Write a Sex Scene," so I called it "How to Not Write a Sex Scene" instead.  I don't know why.  There are sex scenes in a few of my books.  But I guess that I don't have to worry about those scenes falling into the "wrong hands" (family members), as they would probably not commit to reading the book anyway.

So.  Writing sex scenes.  I enjoy this a lot.  It is very fun.  However, there are things that can interrupt your flow.  I'll describe them through bullet points.

• Make sure that the timing is right for your protagonists to become intimate.  Flow is very important. 

• Make sure that you are alone while you are writing sex scenes.  Nothing is worse than writing a steamy scene, only to be interrupted by your son, who might need assistance with wiping his rear.  Or, having your significant other come to you and ask you what you are doing. 

• Don't make it tacky.  Remember that you are not the only party to the intimacy you are writing.  Your readers will also be a party to those romantic scenes.

• Have each encounter mean something.  With each exchange, the relationship should progress.

The Song of the Sleeping Grass, Nice Shootin' Tex, and Summation of Love have a lot of sex scenes in them.  Those were fun to write, but almost embarrassing to publish. Still, all books have received reviews that I am happy with.

So, when writing sexy scenes, have fun.  Make sure that you can do so undisturbed and enjoy the feelings of excitement that will come your way!
